My first cat was a very old stray when he adopted me. I was a total innocent, previously only having dogs.

On the first night he came up onto the bed to sleep, I was lying in a very uncomfortable position all night because I was afraid to upset him.

It didn't take long for me to realise who was in charge.

I am glad that Toby has settled, once Princess Merlin died Frankie was a totally different cat. He couldn't believe that nobody was going to beat him up and make his life miserable.

I'm glad Frankie had some bully-free time after princess Merlin died.
I think Toby is realising what he's missed...first as a feral?/stray, then as a bullied cat.
Cats can be nasty and subtle bullies. Cleo sensed his lack of confidence and took advantage of it.

It is nice that he has relaxed and has settled in. He trusts you and, for a cat, that is a great compliment.

Don’t know whole history but sounds a positive step whatever it is lol
That's made me very happy hearing the latest positive news of Toby.

Don't be surprised if he doesn't make the final step to your lap. Our current little one won't get on anyone's lap, or stay if you put her there.
Our previous little boy wouldn't do laps until he was very old and quite deaf.
Amazing progress (albeit slow, but possibly all the more ingrained because of that).
