The Polish mathematicians deserve a lot of credit, and more than they tend to receive. Turing tends to get almost all the plaudits these days, perhaps also out of guilt about his personal story, the circumstances of his death, his persecution for being gay and so on; and, in the process, his colleagues and his predecessors are overshadowed. But Turing would certainly have been the first to say it was a team effort. It's perhaps also a failing that we are desperate often to find *one* person to praise, rather than an entire organisation (see also the Nobel prize, which is still limited, outside the Peace award, to no more than three individual recipients in spite of the fact that this is completely unrepresentative of modern science).

Another reason is that just in general the contributions of Poles to the war effort tended to be ignored for political reasons at the time. For example, the Polish pilots in the Battle of Britain were not invited to postwar celebrations, despite as high an authority as Dowding praising their vital contribution.

So in this respect, I wouldn't be surprised if there's some level of, sadly not unjustified, bitterness on your friend's part, motivated by this history.

PP you make such good reading, thank you.
we have a lot to be thankful for
( grew up in a village full of DPs of which the Poles who had given up so much, were at the top - Greek at the bottom)

The polish squadron tipped the balance of the Battle of Britain but there were problems in integration - ( they spoke polish ) and they had the highest kill rate. And were fearless - driving their planes at the enemy head on, and that sort of thing

II corps had a bear ( voytek) later of a zoo in Scotland. The old lags would climb the fence in front of visitors and wrestle with it ( 1950s)

it is important to remember they fought for King George and NOT winston churchill who gave their country to Stalin at Yalta ( The Betrayal of Yalta - the usual suspects on AB pretended complete ignorance of that one)[Churchill being obviously without sin]

Only foreign soldiers given british right of residence as a result of service. - but they were herded into concentration camps if they DID go back - Polish settlemennt act 1948

That was quite interesting, Hopkirk.
yes, very good, Hopkirk. I didn't know that about Apple. Well, it wasn't actually true, so I didn't not know about it either. But I knew about the crosswords, because Kate Winslet did one in the film.
surely it was the yanks!
Keira Knightley, not Kate Winslet.
it is still worth reading about

the americans built banks and banks of Bombs to break the settings and so.... the British ran a cable across the atlantic solely for transmission of German coded messages ( super encoded as the geeks put it) to run on the american machines

and they got it to work.

The poles weren't let into the secret possibly on the radar analogy. Watson watt who got the english radar to get up and buzz, was not allowed to see the integrated system - so it wasnt that he prevented from seeing radar but prevented from seeing the integrated system and what they were doing with it

Gully I sortta enjoy moronic and gormless one liners, it makes AB what it is.... a seeething volcano of intellect....

you're right, Hopkirk, Winslet was in the other one.
