Our children need to do a pre flight Covid test for travel TO Spain. Is the the cheaper rapid antigen test accepted by Spain, or does it have to be the expensive PCR test?

look up the Gov.Uk website on travel to Spain for the right answer, it will be more accurate than what we post here. A test is only needed if they are not vaccinated and several are listed including the cheaper LAMP test but the antigen is not advised.

To enter Spain for tourism purposes from the UK, you . . .

EITHER need to show proof that you've been fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to arrival there (with the NHS Covid Pass being accepted https://www.gov.uk/guidance/nhs-covid-pass ) . . .

OR need to show proof of a negative PCR test test taken within 72 hours prior to arrival.

Rapid antigen tests are NOT accepted.
