Hi
Haven't been on here for a while ! I have a Lenovo C340-11 chromebook that will not turn on or off. The power light on the side next to the volume keys remains lit but I cannot get it to turn on or off ! This happened after a firmware update. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried holding the power button down for at least one minute?

Have tried everything that "google" suggested. (Using my desktop) Nothing seems to work.

My first instinct is that (if all else really has failed) the next thing to do is disconnect the battery for a few minutes - which will mean undoing the screws which attach the lower half of the case, levering the case open and just undoing the battery connection cable at whichever end is most accessible - you shouldn't need to remove any parts or even the battery itself. Then reconnect after (say) 10 minutes, do up the case and start again with the boot up attempts.

It's a draconian step - but if nothing external in the way of keypresses or button-pushing has worked, it's where I'd go next (assuming the device is well out of warranty).
I'd try unplugging the battery and then plugging it back in. It might just do the trick (and it shouldn't do any harm). Start by removing the ten screws underneath the unit and then prizing the base off it:

Then unplug the battery, wait a short while, plug it back in and reassemble the unit.

This video shows how to remove the battery but you don't need to go that far. You simply need to unplug it. (I've posted the video so that you can see what it is that you need to unplug):
Dave's post wasn't there when I started typing - but it seems that we're thinking along the same lines anyway.

Many thanks for the suggestions folks, much appreciated. Will have a look at the battery suggestion tomorrow and post with the result !!

As promised I am back with the result - success !! Managed to unplug the battery, left it for about 30 minutes and then plugged it back in. Fitted the back cover and tried it - nothing. Thing is knackered methinks at the time. Good lady said try plugging it in with the charger cable etc - came straight on !! (Wouldn't do that yesterday !) Indicator light was red initially then (and now) flashing orange. This I believe tells me the battery was dangerously low. Anyway, this is what The Answerbank is all about - getting very knowledgeable and friendly help. Thank you all for your help.

Me again !
News is that the battery is cream crackered. Spoke to Lenovo support (although out of warranty they were still prepared to help !!) who, after I told them what had transpired they said it's 99% certain battery has had it. Now looking for a replacement. Thanks again folks.

Thanks for the feedback and glad you have identified the problem. I have bought compatible batteries in the past and they have been okay but I'm surprised Lenovo didn't give you the option of buying direct from them - your machine is less than 2 years old.

Thanks Barry.
I have a feeling though that their prices would be alot higher than elsewhere !!

Here's where I'd buy from. (It seems to be the only seller I can find with decent reviews on Trustpilot):

Have just ordered a new battery via your recommendation - they seem to be the only company to have the correct one !! Thanks once again.
