If you use online banking and you want to change the type of account you have, can you do it online or do you have to phone the bank to do it? TIA.

Barsel , nothing virtual about it at my bank.
Barsel (or anyone else interested) Go to your online Santander account.
from the grey menus underneath the red Sandtander Banner click 'Account Services'
This opens a page with various thigs you can do, including changing your account, looking to see what retailers have offers at the moment, order checks, all sorts.
I'm on santanderand it's clearly laid out.
Ateyou talking one about the cashback offers whi h ate listed online and time limited or direct debits cashback on utlity's or credit card cashback on supermarkets petrol or drpt stores
Santabder online shows you how to open new santander account such as santander lite
It's easier for some than others though -my OH, seriously, would not have a clue.
Regardless of how simple or clear others think Santander banking is, it wasn't for BARSEL and it's sorted now.
Yes the corbyloon but I just wanted to defend santsnder who I think set all cashback out clearly but you of course need to look at there site and I don't think barrel was doing that
I'd not pay any bank for the privilege of allowing them to make a profit from my deposits.
all banks make a profit from their customer's deposits.
i dont think you have to pay for the retailer service, its free
I think they all do that.
That was to TCL.
I've done very nicely over the years out of cashback payments on direct debits and retailer offers from Santander.
I know all banks use customers' deposits but Santander also charges £2 a month on its 1-2-3 account.
My experience of changing the type of account I held with a bank suggests that it's not necessarily that straightforward.

For example, I wanted to change a Santander account from one that only provided a 'cash card' (for use in ATMs but not in shops), to one that provided a proper debit card. I called in at my local branch, taking ID with me, in the hope of doing it instantly. I was told though that I'd have to make an appointment to see an adviser in a few days time, in order to set up a completely new account. That appointment lasted nearly an hour, with countless bits of form-filling and computer checks on my credit status (even though I wasn't seeking an account that offered overdraft facilities). I was then told that I'd have to wait about a fortnight for a decision from Santander's head office!

So don't expect instant success!
me too - because i pay my mortgage to santander too, i get about a tenner a month in cashback

I only have 2 small direct debits set up as I prefer to pay when I get a bill, so it wasn't worth it for me.
Changed my account online after speaking to someone who told me how to do it and it took just a few minutes.
They have all their different accounts set out online, so it was easy to choose.
