Watching 'Downton Abbey' (now on Netflix & very good) in which 'Bates' is arrested for murder & after a Guilty verdict has very hard time in jail. Later after an appeal & new evidence his sentence is quashed & he is released.

This is in the early 20's & there seems to be no question of his getting any compensation for the miscarriage of justice he has suffered. I have been trying to find when compensation started for such cases, does anyone know please?
