I think that a majority know of someone who has/had a mental illness and would want them to get the help and treatment they deserve and need. Thankfully not all of those with such an illness strive to hurt others. My sympathies will always be first and foremost with the victims of such acts of depravity.

Filthy head-case.
Feel sorry for you if you live there.
Weirdo. There are lot of them about
I don't know if it's a mistake or just bad journalism but that article looks like two unrelated stories. One about about someone injecting food with something, and another about a nutter throwing a plant pot at someone.
Question Author
He was multi-tasking.
It makes you wonder how many people have injected food with something and then got away with it by just sneaking away instead of throwing a plant pot at someone afterwards.
I remember my metalwork teacher at high school was convicted of contaminating bottles of baby food at the local supermarket - I think he was sectioned after his trial.
Spicerack - // Filthy head-case. //

Surely if the individual concerned has mental health issues, and let's face it, contaminating supermarket food is not rational behaviour, then he should attract our sympathy rather than hostility?
the BSL signer 1300 yesterday looked absolutely horrified
as he signed - "someone has injected jars with fluid"

eyes bulging and mouth agape like Tom in Tom and jerry
Police say they don't know what was injected, so do they know if something was actually injected?

Head case is an expression, Andy.
Not my diagnosis.
I tend to leave all that stuff to the courts.
Sympathy? Not likely.
Question Author
Seen a few cases in the US where someone poisons their partner for the insurance money (or whatever)
But to cover their tracks they'll contaminate the same medicine (always seems to be medicine) in several stores killing half a dozen complete strangers.
Wonder it doesn't happen here. (or does it?)
tomus, I think the reporter has to be cautious about linking the two cases: it might have been one person or two but unless and until one person is charged with both (or not), media need to beware.
Spicerack - // Head case is an expression, Andy. //

Yes it is - an unpleasant, demeaning, discriminating expression.

// Sympathy? Not likely. //

Why not?
Question Author
It's also a very common expression in the lowly circles I move in.
No sympathy because, if he did the things he was reported to have done, he's a disgusting freak.
He had zero sympathy for his prospective victims.
// contaminating supermarket food is not rational behaviour//

thank god Andie does not read my posts which means I can repeat up to fifty times....

he is so mad it cant be criminal - has been tried as a defence and rejected.

I worked with telephone engineers for over forty years, I've probably forgotten more horrible expressions than you know - but it's about time and place when you use these expressions, and when you don't.

// No sympathy because, if he did the things he was reported to have done, he's a disgusting freak. //

But he's probably a mentally ill 'disgusting freak' and does that not attract any compassion in you?

// He had zero sympathy for his prospective victims. //

As I said, contaminating food is not the actions of a rational mind, so I doubt he had any rational concept of the consequences of his actions.

That's what some mental illnesses do - and I think we as a society are required to accept that the dreadfulness of the action should not be bracketed with the unwell mind that carried it out.
