I always just put my gas oven cooker on max and hope for the best better cooked than not! A lot of people i know just “whack it on 200” and this is nice but my knob doesn’t have numbers on it theyre rubbed off so max it is for me what about you? Are you part of the whack it on 200 gang or do you find yourself trying to be precise with temperatures

My gas oven numbers 1-9. Where did 200 come from? I cook different things at different gas marks.
200c is gas mark 6 so about 3/4 the way on your dial.
200 is best for a lot of things but you might need higher only to brown something off.
I don't vary much from 200 for chicken and chops etc, but you could turn it right down for slow cooking to tenderise meat in casseroles etc.
180 for me, maybe 210 for 15 mins then turn it down.
That’s for ordinary cooking, baking is a different matter and needs precise temp and time.
There are dials on our cookers for a reason .

oh my goodness trying to bake in my oven is near impossible i got a thermometer for the oven because as i say the knob has all been rubbed down and the didgets cant be seen anymore
Question Author
sorry that sent too early lol i was going to go on to say and the thermometer works but is awkward to figure out where to have the dial knob thing set to to get a specific temperature and then even if i do things say 200 degrees OR gass mark whatever so in a gas oven does the temperature matter as much as it would in a fan?
Gas oven temperatures are in marks, electric and fan ovens are in degrees.
If you are cooking everything on max, you may not be cooking things through properly.
As mjwman said, try turning the dial 2 thirds of the way only for gas mark 6, see how you get on.

Or get a new dial with numbers on :)
mjw didnt say that though
There are people out there who can help with a worn-out knob.
7.06 that sounds rude.
its supposed to, droll......
They charge a lot per hour Doug.
Not that I've ever needed their services
I'm shocked at where your minds are going!

Other specialists are available, and anyway, he started it with 'whack it on' chat. :-P
