//Rather than being wary of the Chinese they will welcome their money in exploiting Afghanistan’s natural resources.//

I was rather thinking the Taliban must be well aware of what the Chinese have done to Muslims.
ymb//Chinese have done to Muslims.// It does not seem that they are too worried.

Nothing but falsehoods and soundbites. They'll be back to their old misogynistic selves in no time.
it's like we're not too worried about how the Saudis treat minorities and women and so forth - we need the oil, so we take the knee.
jno, what has taking the knee got to do with Saudis? They are not connected to BLM.
"take the knee" is Trademarked now jno.

'turn a blind eye' or possibly 'aid and abet' (in the American accommodation) is more apt.
China is close to Pakistan to counter India (Pakistan is heavily in debt to China)... so China supports the taliban because Pakistan does... Whatever the taliban says I doubt they care about china's treatment of muslims... Taliban certainly are not above killing or oppressing other muslims.
I haven't read other answers. Yes, we are right to be sceptical. Leopards/spots come into it. Also one must bear in mind what words mean to different people. Women will be equal under Sharia law. Now there are a few points for discussion to start with. Sharia can vary in interpretation and can be interpreted as pretty proscriptive.
Education - yes, but what sort of education? For a woman to be able to read the Koran is laudable. A degree in female studies, law? Forget it.
No. I am certain that we cannot impute Western ideas to their words. I am so very sorry for Afghan females - when they have had a glimpse of freedom.
It will all come out in the wash - but my bet is that it won't be nice.
