Coalition was there for 20 years and has left things worse than they found them...

is resettling those who can flee the taliban the least we can do or shall we batten down the hatches and leave them to their fate?

Yes there was Australian troops involved.
Coz we get sucked in to every war our allies get involved with.
We should accept our fair share of asylum seekers.
As long as they are "vetted" first, which is what every country should do.
vetting people, seems a plan, but will it happen, seems that takes a long time, and the people there want to get out now...
Alas Australia tried that, Manus Island comes to mind.
Wasn't one of our success stories:-(
