Hi all, I have a 10 week old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that I've had for nearly 2 weeks. We are crate training him and for the first few days this was going well, he had accidents in the house now and then but never in his crate. Over the last 4 days he has been weeing in his crate and we dont know how to stop it. My husband and I are setting our alarms every 2 hours through the night to get up and take him to toilet but we still sometimes get up and he's already soiled. We just dont know what to do next. Any ideas?

Hi, Snuggle, me again...lol. Can't really offer much advice on the weeing situation as I have never used a crate. Is it big enough for a bedding and paper area? At ten weeks he is still pretty young and as such can't be expected not to have accidents. A puppy kept in a room overnight for example would be doing well to be going on the paper as opposed to the floor! Also remember it wasn't long ago he was seperated from his brother. So just remember, When he gets it right, praise praise and more praise, when he gets it wrong.....count to ten....and start again.
Good luck

Hi again Lisa,
We praise him loads when he gets it right and say nothing at all when he gets it wrong because we havent caught him in the act so no point telling him off because he wouldnt have a clue what we were telling him off for by then!! We have had so much conflicting advice when its come to crate training that we dont know what to do for the best. Stanley is left for about 2 and a half hours on his own when I'm at work and I was leaving him in the crate but I've started to leave him in the kitchen with the crate open instead now with paper on the floor so he only uses his crate as his sleep/comfort area. When left in the crate he was sometimes soiling and I would rather he soiled the kitchen floor than his own bed!

Hi Snuggle, try Googling 'how to crate train a puppy' I tried it and got loads of sites, unfortunately didn't have time to read any of them, but I would suggest if you find one you like the sound of and stick to their plan that should work.

its rare for a puppy to soil his own crate/den. does he have a special place in the garden?
