Apparently it is normal:-
I’ve had the same in my garden.
we have a pair of magpies who as all magpies, are extremely territorial. They have their brood each year and are great parents at that stage. like most birds though, the young are then expected to move on and find their own "place" if they outstay their time, the parents will then dominate them to let them know it's time to go!
They are vicious. I once saw two magpies chase and peck a third one to death because it had strayed into their territory.
Normal Maggpie thing, they are very territorial. We used to have a Black and White cat whose name was Tommy ( RIP ), one day I saw him sitting on top of one of the recyling dustbins in the back yard when he was attacked by a flock of Maggpies. Probablly because he was the same colour has them ( Black and White ).
Our much adored cat used to eat the head of the rabbit population and leave the rest for the magpies! They seemed to have an alliance when they were all about together, she left them alone and they never bothered her. Since she's gone, they have tried knocking on our doors and window.
I never knew magpies were that territorial
