Yet we are still allowing Britons to be extradited to the US! Even the American press were questioning the Pres about this killer driver when we were there in October 2019, his response was along the lines of Well, I've driven on the wrong side of the road too in the UK.
I don't know, gness. I only believed, from what I had read, that it wasn't intentional... and so, an accident.
I'm more worried about evil people who mean to, than people making mistakes, and being punished by outcome rather than intention.
Pixie ... If you were in the USA and played a similar role as Sacoolas in accidentally killing a young US citizen, you would have been charged and would not be leaving the country. Do you believe that she deserves better treatment than you?
Different laws in different countries, fair enough. I can't imagine anyone else would make me feel worse than I already did.
No, it's not different laws that's the issue. I must have 50 American friends, none of whom are spies. If they had killed Harry, they would have had to stay and face the consequences. It's an abuse of diplomatic immunity that she fled the country. As NJ said, the charge would probably not have been too serious. She should have stayed and faced it, not been a spineless coward.
er well they arent but this is AB so what the hell

They are defending a civil case ( the one in America ) altho I would be inclined to settle. I dont think anyone seriously holds that if you have diplomatic immunity then you can run over and kill a 19 y old.

we havent had ( and will never get ) the back story - a bit like Yvonne Fletcher - the right advice was given immediately and ignored ( and they actively chose to follow the wrong advice)
I just hope her children grow up despising her for not facing up to what she did. That would be a higher punishment that anything the courts would probably have handed out had she stayed and faced them.
'than anything', not 'that'.
milvus: "Tragically, the USA will never give up one of their citizens, whatever the charge and the evidence. Does anyone have an example of when they have done in the past? "
Cobras me old china:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK%E2%80%93US_extradition_treaty_of_2003
"The US embassy in London reports that, as of April 2013, 38 individuals have been extradited from the US to the UK."
probably more now.
listen to the judge at 22:48. It was an accident she would almost certainly not have been jailed. If she'd hung around it'd all be over now she must carry this burden the rest of her life. It wouldn't surprise me, assuming she has a trace of guilt, if she came over here off her own bat. It's the sort of thing that would eat away at you.
On 12 February 2020, the Leader of the Opposition stated in Parliament “this lopsided treaty means the US can request extradition in circumstances that Britain cannot”.
The Prime Minister replied: “to be frank, I think the right honourable Gentleman has a point in his characterisation of our extradition arrangements with the United States”
An interesting piece from David Davis:
Why do we send Britons to be tried in a land where 97% get convicted?

I am afraid Uncle Sam is like this, to preach christianity and goodness but then ignore others feelings and just protect themselves. The sad thing is that due to the accident if Sacoolas had stayed and faced the music she would have been back home before now.
