As an aside does anyone think that corporal punishment (birching) would be a more effective deterrent/punishment for low level crime than fines (probably go unpaid) and/or community orders?

I can understand people robbing banks, or killing someone who killed their cat etc

But why did they do this and what did they hope to gain from their actions? A group of really strange individuals. Hitting a woman is still considered unacceptable, maybe the other prisoners will ensure that Superman knows this.
