Maybe fewer babies with allergies survived past the first couple of years in the past.
I don't know if allergies are really new. When I was young the little boy next door had quite severe asthma (I don't know if allergies were involved, but allergic asthma is the commonest sort in children); and the little girl across the road died during an attack.

When I was in junior school two of my school pals spent time in a sanatorium in Switzerland due to asthma.
I swear that the nut/lactose/gluten intolerant etc didn't exist in the 1950s - 1970s. Have we become a nation of wimps?
Those who have nut allergies to a serious level just turn blue etc to show how wimpish they really are eh?

Lactose and Gluten intolerances were probably treated as unknown/unnamed stomach and bowel issues years ago.

plants share allergens ( one in all in sort of - this is AB)
darwin and all that - once a stationary plant has solved a problem, the solution ( protein, DNA ) will persist and not get lost

and yes you can do a family tree of plants using this
yeah gluten was non tropical sprue

( looked like sprue but never been to gomboola or some other colonial paradise where every white man died on his thritieth birthday )

PP, it's not a nut, for chrissakes - it's a legume, related to the pea.
