I'm fed up with table knives that don't cut, but don't really want to go down the steak knife route. Does anybody know of any table knives that are sharp to start with and are subsequently sharpenable?

What is it that you want to cut? If it's steak, then surely a steak knife would be appropriate? If it's veg, then you don't really need anything very sharp, do you?
I once got compensation from the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam. We used the hotel frequently - anyway, slipped in there for breakfast and being the slob I was, I licked my butter knife as it was covered with not only the butter but marmalade too. I opened my tongue up and quite profusely too on the blood front. They had sharpened their butter knives to the point of being even sharper than steak ones..... so take care! I am sure Teflon won't be compensating you....
DTC I too once cut my tongue licking a knife. I couldn't eat for days. And it wasn't a steak knife!!
Knife-honing is a very sharp practice, I understand. It's described as being at the cutting-edge of market-traders....

We want to cut meat, bread, toast ... all sorts of things that are neither vegetables nor steak! Promise not to lick the knives if I find them :-)
Tefler, steak knives are fine; just don't lick them.
By 'steak knives' I mean knives with a serrated edge.
