My friend and I love going to a certain coffee shop. I check their website sometimes to see if they're not hiring someone but there's never any position free. Today my friend asked whether she should try to apply and told me she found out they're hiring. I was excited and said it would be cool if we tried to apply and then worked together but she didn't look pleased. She also 'jokingly' said I could wait until she hears from them. I don't want to betray her but at the same time I really would like to get the job. Is it wrong of me to apply too?

I can understand that, as the number of vacancies will certainly be limited, your friend doesn't want extra competition when she's applying for a job. (It's bad enough getting turned down for a job but a million times worse when a friend, who might not have found out about the vacancy if you'd not mentioned it in the first place, nicks it from under your nose!)....

I'm really struggling to see how any form of betrayal is involved here. Apply for the job if you like. Or don't. But it's got nothing to do with anybody else.

However jobs are in short supply at the moment. If you think that you'd make a good candidate, go for it!
No it isn't wrong for you to apply too..she may be upset if you get the job and she doesn't but you both may be upset if a total stranger gets it and you two don't......Applying for jobs is a skill and you lose nothing by applying...if you don't get it you will get some good experience for the next job you go for.
Take the hint. Don't apply yet. Wait until she gives you the green light.
Go for it.
// I'm really struggling to see how any form of betrayal is involved here// - if one girl gets it and the other doesnt - and looks on it as 'her' job. Big deal if you need moolah

jobs arent ear marked ( but No 2 is unlikely to see that) so apply

The employer wants the most suited ( 'best' here) and wont be pleased with the idea - I didnt apply coz it was Joe-leenz job yeah?
