My Acer laptop suddenly went crazy and popped up a fatal error message which promptly disappeared therefore I have no details of the number. The problem I have now is that the screen that is shown for my password is in colour(although a little insipid) but once my password has been input the colour disappears and I am left with blue hue screen without any distinguishing colours. Any advise please? Thanks

Try the obvious first: Turn off the laptop, if that's possible without being able to see the normal desktop. (Pressing and holding the power button might do the trick). Remove the charger lead, if it was plugged in. If possible (which will depend upon the model of your laptop), then remove the battery. If that doesn't work, try booting into Safe Mode to see if you can access the 'Troubleshoot' screen:

Thanks Buenchico. I now have a laptop that looks 'normal'. It took a while to boot in safe mode but now I have spare to play with.
