I think we should put this question to one of the regular AB posters, 'thecorbyloon'.
A bit of a generalisation but I think the figures indicate that there is more of a tendency in the north to eat junk food and do sod all exercise. Not sure if that comes under "culture" or not. Don't think it's a coincidence and I don't think it's genetic. Now pass me a deep fried Mars bar!
ha ha northen fatties - joke, I think its down to culture
The 10 'hot spots' for obesity are also the poorest areas of the country. They will also share other poverty related similarities like the most smokers and a high instance of heart disease, underage pregnancies etc.

It is nothing at all to do with culture, genetics or coincidence.
I am sure if the survey wanted to prove the south was fattest, it could.

Surprised my stomping ground of Teesside isn't in there;
A takeaway delicacy round here is the Chicken Parmesan:
Fried chicken breast in breadcrumbs, covered with white sauce and cheese, then grilled.
Very popular.
Research can "prove" anything but interesting to see the PM's constituency in there (Sedgefield).
well james boy have to agree with you there teesides my stomping ground to in one of our main roads every other shop its a takeaway, infact were full of takeaways and pubs !
I think my answer to your question Jake. is that it's a mixture of all three. (a bit boring, I know) soz.
Gromit has a point, certainly, but it then raises the question
'why are these the poorest areas of the country ?'
Corby was often referred to as 'llittle Glasgow', so maybe there is a clue here ?
Personally, for answers, I'd search in the Culture, sub-culture, sub-sub-culture areas. I'd also look closely into the issue of Social Class, then compare the findings with levels of educational attainment. There is a PhD thesis in there somewhere...
