I started to watch this last night as I thought it might be interesting. Gave up after about fifteen minutes as I had no idea what was going on - there seemed to be no order to it, first of all there were slaves on a plantation, then there was a man living with a family and wearing posh clothes, then he was in a cell - I couldn't follow what was happening as it was so disjointed. Unless I can tell what is going on in the first ten minutes I can't be bothered to work it out.

Spoiler, in case no-one's seen it .....

I've watched this film and didn't personally find it disjointed. He was a 'free man' and quite well to do, but slave traders decided to kidnap him into slavery far away from his home. The reason I didn't like it and won't watch it again was because it was quite graphic and very hard to watch at times, albeit the happy ending.
Yes, it was a sad film and I've only seen once. Didn't find it disjointed at all.

How did you know he was a free man (ie born a free man) as the opening scenes were on a plantation then jumped to him playing a fiddle at a wedding. It didn't say when it was and why didn't it say about where he was born? I only know this since I googled it this morning.
I thought it was a brilliant film albeit the graphic violent scenes which I also found very hard to watch.
I think you need to watch it in its entirety to understand the timelines.
It's a while since I've seen the film and I just remember him being a 'free man', no idea if he was born that way. I still have no recollection of it being disjointed, just brutal in parts.
That film was a real eye opener, how the slaves were treated appalled me
Chiwetel Ejiofor, for my money, is one of the finest actors the UK has to offer right now. I always thought he'd make a great Doctor Who, but he's probably too Hollywood now.
