I have double gates which have been varnished using a stainer/varnish. I would now like to paint them grey. Is it possible to paint over varnish?

Yes, just sand it down to give it a 'key', undercoat and top coat. If it is a dark stain, and you are going 'light', i would advise a double undercoat. Much easier than a double gloss coat.
However, if you are going for a colour, use the appropriate undercoat.

Think hard before you paint anything grey. Everybody, well 99% of the population, is doing the same thing. It is such a depressing colour.
