No idea how much surgeons in the private sector earn and I don't care but NHS surgeons get paid from public money.
I couldn't give a hoot how much these 'stars' earn as long as I'm not paying their wages - hopefully they pay their fair share of income tax.
The BBC has to pay the going rate - otherwise all the best would go to the commercial channels.
Not sure the talent would all leave. There is a certain cachet to working for the national broadcaster. Also, the other news broadcasters, ITV, Sky are less left-biased. Channel 4 News (from ITV) does tend to be more questioning of the government though.
I understand that BBC pay less than C4 and ITV in a lot of cases. If that's the going rate I doubt they would say no! Not sure it's fair to compare to other professions if it's standard pay for the industry.
