I see on BBC News site, that the government is finally addressing one of the huge problems of these troubled times, internet porn.

Yes, I know it is prefixed with 'violent', but as the actual definition of what is banned is up the government (or the courts) you can see where this is going, can't you? By way of example of how 'moderate' becomes 'extreme', you can have porn mags you can buy in WH Smith confiscated by the C&E if you attempt to import them into the UK.

(BTW, I'm not a fan of any of it myself, I rarely view the stuff, but I'm just sick of endless government nannying)

manga is japanese...
violet stuff, yes definatly normal stuff Definatly not, we like it too much!!!!
At the risk of upsetting a few people I would rather see those responsible for posting rape, torture, snuff movies and necrophillia etc brought to task for what they are doing. It is illegal just like child ponography. There may be 'pretend' rape and torture being depicted in some instances but it is impossible to know the difference.
Alijandgra, I completely agree. Unfortunately, the government thinks that they can limit the demand. And it is so much easier to prosecute an average Joe, than chase after sometimes highly skilled people who put that stuff up in the first place.

But, I have to disagree with your comment re: rape, torture, and snuff movies. For starters, existence of what I suspect you mean by snuff movies is still very much an urban myth. No doubt there are some sickoes out there but no snuff movie has ever been found, as far as I am aware. As to not being able to tell which one is a genuine re-enactment or a consensual S/M activity made by/for BDSM community and which one is the real thing, it's rubbish! most are former and are easily recognised as such.

Loads of people are ignorant about BDSM community and fear its practices and the above is often used as a stick to beat them over the head with, don't fall into that category.

Oh, come on alijangra, I'd venture none of the commercial stuf is 'real'.

It mostly comes from the States and the producers/providers are legitimate businesses, run for profit. Don't you think that if 1000s of adults were really being tortured and abused in the USA, on film, someone in authority would have a/ heard about it, b/ done something about it.

It's all just play-acting, aimed at a very specific audience.
Im sorry I dont agree. The real stuff is out there for sure just like the real child porn which the authorities also do very little about. Why would other forms of illegal porn be any easier to control than child pornography??
Historically, those imbued with the power to control human behavior typically end up being the worst of the lot. Positions of power and control are like magnets drawing those who seek only to have power and control. Those who should be knocked off the lowest rungs of moral stature should not be delegated to serve as the ladder.

There is far less being done then what could be done to protect known victims of abuse and prosecute their abusers. When it comes to the most depraved and violent forms of porn we need to take a closer look at what those who are already in power are up to.
Alijangra, have you ever come across the real stuff, I can tell you I havent, neither have I heard of anyone else. I am extremely cynical; I tend to imagine the worst, so I would be the first one to argue for the existence of snuff movies. But until they are found, those are just what they are - figments of my and every other paranoid persons imagination. There, like you said, are much more real risks.

You seem to be missing a point though. The government DOESNT recognise CONSENSUAL sexual deviance (violence). The only times consensual violence is accepted are in the doctors surgery, a sports arena, tattoo parlour and certain cases of ABH or GBH. Now how can you justify putting consensual activity into the same category as paedophilia or bestiality? There will always be risks on the internet. The argument for this law was that they lead to crime, here can I direct you back to the link I posted before. There was a serial killer whose fetish was shoes. Shall we ban shoe production now? Or how about an issue of sex/violence in music, that has been around for God knows how long? Ban all your metal, rap, punk, reggae... What about computer games? Remember Columbine? Movies then, stuff like Matrix and the more obvious like Crash (1996).

...........
If it is the risk to children and their susceptibility to all this you are talking about then again its a completely different issue. They get bombarded with violence on every scale from all directions nowadays. Why use Internet as scapegoat? You wouldnt let your child go to the XXX shop and rent a video there, why do people let their children then have tvs/dvds in their bedroom where they can watch anything unsupervised, why let them play computer games that thrive on mutilation, torture, and killings? Why allow them to have a pc in their bedroom where they are again unsupervised? Just because some parents havent got the time or just cant be bothered to teach their kids about the rights and wrongs, about the world out there, about the diversity in people about the freedom of expression they make it someone elses fault.

Think about it, how much money was invested into all this nonsense. You know deliberating, pretending they care, wasting their time on trying to find another way around the most basic of human rights. And how much more is going to go into trying to control the situation after, into enforcement, prosecution. Why not spend this money into something that every person on this planet knows is illegal and that is sexual exploitation of children. Its like a bl00dy smoke screen. You know, you cant deal with the situation create a more elaborate and serious threat, maybe that will stop people asking questions. Its a disgrace.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, the most unconsensual violence I have seen on the net actually comes from children... 'Happy slapping' anyone?

Well put Justsia. I agree with you.

A load of time and money spent on something that isn't a problem in the first place.

I wonder where 'controlling internet porn' would come on a list if you asked people's opinions on what the police should be spending their time on?
