Which is considered the best material for a slide, finger sleeve and is it the same for acoustic and electric guitar ?

Different materials give different tones I thought,most guitarists use metal or glass I thought, I read somewhere, there's no hard rule to say which is best or what type you should use. They reckon a heavier slide is best for acoustic, brass maybe something like that.
