What Has Happened To Weddings?

When I got married my bride to be stressed about her choice of frock and the colours for the bridesmaid and flowers. I'm sure my wife will say there was much more to stress about than that.
Apart from that it was a simple, happy day.

We've just been invited to a wedding and it has a 1920s theme! Why? Surely the theme is 'wedding' and it is now a fancy dress party. I see weddings as a chance to buy a new suit, perhaps, a new shirt and tie anyway and a fancy frock and hat for my wife. Clothes that can be worn many times more.

A couple of years ago we were invited to a wedding with a Blues Brothers theme. We managed to dodge that one without causing offence.

So, what's with themed weddings? I don't get it

We were grateful for those things APC when setting up home together as a married couple, my fist husbands old Aunty bought us a standard lamp, we thought that was really posh haha

The last wedding I attended was that of my niece who decided to get married 150 miles away. Not only forking out for new clothes, we had the added cost of hotel fees. As it was a mid week wedding many guests had to take leave.
Whatever happened to Saturday weddings in your local church??!!

We once went to one where the brides sister took a bucket round at the evening disco for spending money for the couples one week holiday in Corfu :0(

Everybody got married on a Saturday back in the early 70's when I got married. I had a lovely white dress which I didn't take hours and hours to choose which Dad paid for. In fact Dad paid for everything, apart from the invitations which me and future hubby bought. The taxis were just that, ordinary taxis but with white ribbon placed along the bonnet to indicate it was going to a wedding ! A church wedding and a meal afterwards at a local Masonic Hall with a band in the evening. Most people did it like that back then. Nowadays it costs thousands which a lot of couples have to pay themselves and yes, they have 'themes' ! Preferred it in my day to be honest.

I'm thinking back to my older...by 14 years...sister's wedding. I was a "junior bridesmaid" as I was just 13. 3 of us had matching turquoise satin? dresses with chiffon draped across the neckline and very wide skirts with layers of petticoat under. It was a church wedding with a reception at a local posh venue. This was 1959-60. I suppose this was expected and parents helped fund it. By the time I got married, mum was widowed and we children of the 60s wouldn't have expected/wanted money to be spent on that. Both she and I had bridal showers but presents were mostly of the practical kind. I think well off people had wedding lists at department stores even then. I wouldn't dream of asking for specifics. I don't know about UK weddings now...but my nephew and his wife were gifted mostly with money 4 years ago.
But weddings have always changed with the times...did you know that before the Marriage Act of 1753, only 2 witnesses were required. No church, no clergyman. Simple was the word.

These days some of the wedding arrangements take ages to sort out and they actually last longer than the couple are together before getting divorced. We went to a wedding 2 years ago and there was a peaky blinders theme to it with the women in flapper dresses. Easy for the men though as really it was just a case of putting on a flat cap with a suit. One of my sons got married abroad so it was shorts for that one.
