Sofa, and living room...that's what we yanks call the lounge. Lounge sounds like a Moroccan style room with low cushion covered seating that's close to the floor. Really as far as you can get from a typical English lounge ;)
Americans also say couch...I can't remember when I last used that word. And settle conjures up images of a tiny, not very sturdy sofa.

Sofa and living room. My late MIL had The Room, only used for funerals and royal visits, she never called it anything else, she lived in 'the back room' and had a tiny, tiny kitchen smaller than a modern utility room, ancient cooker, no room for draining board even!

Ahhh, but years ago, they used to have wooden benches called settles, Pasta. There was one in the kitchen at my parents. No idea why they were called that, they were hard and uncomfortable and you wouldnt be able to settle on them very long!
