Before we had all this technology , how did the ref fare with having to put back balls in the original positions ?

That's fine when only one ball ( usually the cue ball) needs replacing .

Must have been interesting when a few red balls also moved :-)

the same as in football before VAR, I suppose: the ref made a decision and anyone disagreeing was sent off.

I don't think it was an issue back in the day. Correct me if I'm wrong, but replacing the balls is only done when a miss is called, and the miss rule was only created in 1995.
