Someone who had done 3 tours of Afghanistan would never stoop to sycophancy.
Strikes me as one of the more reasonable and principled tories... very few survived the Johnson purges. It's no surprise that he's leaving. A person like that cannot possibly do well under a lazy cynical charlatan like Johnson.
twas evva thus, innit?

and will you do OK as an ex sycophant ?
I was gonna say triumphantly "like David Cameron!"
but there are differences..... hmm I am not sure
o god I thought this was footie
there has been a fall out ( throat slitting if Russian) of CEOs innit?

walking out of No 10 and then walking into industry
hey there is an idea no one thought of before
I'd walk - and have done in the past.
//Strikes me as one of the more reasonable and principled tories//

Thats because he is a proper Tory, not part of the "New Labour" crowd that Call me Dave started, May lapped up and Johnson the green embraces
He walked (but then was pushed) for a principle.

Unfortunately I cannot agree with him. If soldiers murder people they should be charged, no matter how much time has lapsed.
Mercer wants trials to be stopped. He is wrong. If there is evidence and prosecutions have been enacted, then justice should be seen to be done.
Sunk //If soldiers murder people//
If they in fact did commit murder then I tend to agree with you but killing someone in the legal execution of their duty is not murder.

Soldiers are subject to the law as much as anyone. It does not make you exempt or give you a license to kill. The rules of combat are very clear. If a soldier flouts those rules then he acting illegally.
A court and jury should decide, not a Government Minister.

//Soldiers are subject to the law as much as anyone. It does not make you exempt or give you a license to kill//
I never said that they were exempt.
So if they are suspected of committing a crime, and the prosecution have evidence, why on earth should a jury not hear and decide? Mercer says they should avoid a trial, and has resigned because there will be a trial.
The problem is, as you very well know, many soldiers have been subjected to protracted accusations from vexatious ambulance chasing scum.

This needs to be stopped and there does need to be some sort of limitation on prosecution, timewise.

Otherwise you will find, as it iseems we already are, that no one will fight for your right to spout off Gromit.
There is also the problem that if the soldier was acting on (explicit or implicit) orders, it's the state that should be on trial, not the soldier.

As for Johnny Mercer, he's a breed of Tory that's currently on the decline, unfortunately.
Did you support him becoming party leader youngmafbog?
I’d walk. You keyboard warriors should make me laugh, but you don’t. During the ‘’troubles’’ in Northern Ireland.
Foot-patrols could and often did encounter youths throwing petrol bombs directly at you...that’s right, trying to burn you alive, often gangs of them. Trying to defend yourself and your fellow soldiers by strategic withdrawals sometimes wasn’t viable.
Mercer , This Johnson Govt, is the most distrustful environment I have ever worked in, "No one tells the truth"...... Well at least Mercer has told the truth,,,,,,.
All depends whether you think you could change things from the inside, as I'm sure Mr Mercer thought he may have been able to do.

I'd hardly call BoJo a despot though. Idi Amin he ain't.
// The problem is many soldiers have been subjected to protracted accusations from vexatious ambulance chasing scum.//

yeah but no but: the west african rape allegations were all badly founded. But I think Proctor has been struck off ( solicitor)

the answer is not to give immunity but to go after the shyster lawyers
Mercer also says, .....Westminster is a cesspit which is populated by children who are unemployable elsewhere.
......Sock it to em Johnny.....
> Westminster is a cesspit which is populated by children who are unemployable elsewhere

What could he mean??? LOL.
It's full of little chits?
