I have two questions

(1) Is there a difference between Jam and Preserve? I usually eat Mackays Scottish Strawberry Preserve - is that just Strawberry Jam with a fancy name?

(2) Kiwi fruit - I bought three of these last week and put them in the fridge where I put all my fruit bar my bananas. They are like bricks. I took them out of the fridge at the weekend to see if they would ripen/soften but they are still so hard that I couldn't get a knife through them.
Apart from waiting until they are ripe and ready to eat is there anything that I can do to make them edible?

Thanks for any help

2.

To ripen the kiwi fruit, remove them from the fridge and place them in a vented plastic bag with an apple or banana at room temperature to hasten ripening. They will also ripen on their own at room temp, it will just take a little longer.

Thanks for that, I have to admit that I thought that I was having Strawberry Jam on toast but it's Strawberry Preserve.

I forgot to buy my bananas when out yesterday. I will see if the kiwi fruit ripens on its own. This hasn't happened before and I am getting a bit impatient.

I used to be forced to put fruit in the fridge because it seemed to develop little pinprick holes about the size of sharp canine teeth. Maybe I will buy a fruit bowl.

Thanks
Awww, yes maybe a fruit bowl would be good.
If it's fairly cheap, it's called 'jam'.

If it's quite expensive, it's called 'preserve'.

If you send your chauffeur to Fortnum and Mason to buy it, it's called 'conserve'.

;-)
I thought jams weren't suppose to be kept in the fridge.

I keep lots in the fridge that probably shouldn't be in there. Currently, there are about 500ml bottles of Pepsi Max, bottles of tap water and jars of marmite and tins of fruit and some fruit.

All the food is in the freezer.
