There are loads of tips on the internet but, rather than directing you any particular one, I'll offer you a link to this blog from someone who's actually tried several of them, to find out if they work: https://food52.com/blog/24647-how-to-keep-towels-soft-fluffy

Tumble them.
I'll second that, never hang them out.
Stop using comfort and put them on the washing line to dry.

I'm probably on my own here, but I really dislike soft and fluffy towels - I prefer them with a bit of texture.
Use half the amount of Ariel, and never use conditioner on towels.

Partially dry on the line and tumble for 10 minutes to finish them.
Conditioner makes them less absorbant. Hanging on the line and finishing off on a low heat in the dryer works for me.
I'm with ginge.
^pleased about that, ladybirder!
The idea that conditioner makes towels less absorbant (and so should not be used) is a bit old-hat...many conditioners now say "suitable for use with towels" - Waitrose own-brand for example.
I always put mine in the tumble drter just for ten minutes only and then finish them off on the line.It works for me.!
Move to somewhere with soft water, or get a water softener fitted.
I tumble dry my towels and they keep lovely. My mother's were like cardboard after she hung them on the line.
Our water is really soft.

Unless it's frozen.
Before towels are fully dry, put them in the tumble, drier to finish them off. I have tried baking soda, white vinegar, no conditioner, but possibly a better quality towel in the first place will stay softer longer. An expensive way of finding out though!!
I dont actually use conditioner at all.
