Are there any crocheters out there to point me in the direction of a pattern for a woman's beanie hat in BRITISH English? American English has different terminology and is confusing. Many thanks.

Try Deramores
Racoony, when I want a pattern I google....Free crochet patterns for....then whatever I want to crochet. There are hundreds.

The terminology can be confusing but I keep a chart of American crochet to UK crochet terms and it is easy to follow.
Deramores offer patterns with UK and US terms
I wouldn't know my crochet from my musical crotchets but have you checked out the (UK-based) Crochet Society's website? (Despite the word 'society' in that name, it's actually a commercial venture but it appears to offer free crochet patterns anyway, including some for beanie hats). I've no idea whether the patterns they provide actually originate in the UK or the USA but they might well be worth a look:

(I've checked out their registration form. You don't have to sign up to any of their paid services to access the patterns).
