Thanks, Bobbinwales, it’s a Scottish Field prize crossword closing in April, so I can’t query the clue at the moment.
STABLEBOY and not stableman
ORATORY and not ability
WOOL and not whim
MAMMAL and not mohair
MOWER and not hewer or hower

That bottom corner now works so the 'setter' can plead innocence!
The problem is that oratory doesn’t parse - that was what was being queried
