10 year old Vokera combi boiler disconected as engineer stated there is a crack on heat exchanger and its dangerous. Had a cover plan and the company said they have written off the boiler. Feel pushed to get it replaced by them. Would it be very expensive to replace or shall we get a new combi boiler? Thanks in advance

☆ To replace the part
You don't say which model you have mk.

The heat exchangers can be anything from 150 to 300 pounds.

I assume it's gas?
Question Author
It is Compact 29 model and its gas, thank you.
Your looking at £300 plus, and I dare say a few bits and dabs. It would be interesting if you said you would get / pay for the exchanger, and ask them to fit it under your cover plan. Free labour.

They were going to replace part but after 3 days changed their mind and said its written off. With my plan im getting £750 towards a new combi boiler but thought i could replace part if not very expensive as quotes are for nearly 2k
There are several Compact 29's mk.

It affects the price of the heat exchanger.

For new boiler
Question Author
The Builder, thats what it says on it, nothing else.
Ok. No matter. I've checked different models, and they're all around 200-300.

As teacake has mentioned, that would be worth it if you don't have to pay for the labour costs.

Well worth asking someone to quote for the whole job (parts and labour) and take it from there.
You're in a difficult position. 10 years is not a great age for a gas Combi, so it's a hard call. There is always the risk that other components might also be ready to fail.

2k for a new boiler is fair. Also, even in 10 years, boilers have improved a lot. Probably with a 7 year warranty as well.

It's always a gamble. You may well be lucky and get many more years service out of it with a new H/E. I honestly can't say.
Get a quote, and then see how you feel :o)
Question Author
Thank you, yep its a gamble and im not lucky person! I got one quote for 2.300 and will get another 2.
Having paid out over £600 for repairs to a valiant boiler that is 10 years old. Today I bought a Worcester Bosch 30i combi 10 years warranty. £2,295 fitted. That includes vat.
David, read your warranty conditions carefully; it probably excludes normal wear and tear and only allows for manufacturing faults.
Question Author
Thank you, i'll consider that make too.
Thank you atheist, I had not thought of that.
David, we were warned about that by our regular Vaillant service guy. He did advise that our 10 year old might be not worth repairing and quoted an approx 2.5k for a new one, but we opted for a new PCB (boiler brain card) and that seems to have done the trick. He wasn't pushy about selling us a new one. I am a great fan of Vaillant, ever since the old Sine 18 (equivalent to a Morris minor, which can carry on working even if it gets a bit old). The more electronics, the more to go wrong. We inherited our Vaillant Turbomax and it's very good (although not a condensing boiler). It's always difficult to make a call when a middle-aged boiler gets wheezy.
