The preamble states:
The letters in 16 squares are not allowed for in the wordplay of the clues involved. Taken as a group when encoded these 16 letters magically lead to a number.

I have all but 4 answers. But cannot figure out the 16 clues missing a letter. Please give me some hints

Also is my answer to 17d correct?
Clue: very difficult to promote teacher's 11 (8).
11 answer is travellers.
So is answer to 17d Pilgrims?

PILGRIMS is correct. PIG=something very hard and SIRS is a conventional indicator for "teachers". L and M are therefore the missing letters. As a hint, the missing letters are distributed in the grid symmetrically.
There are not 16 clues missing a letter - there are 8 clues, each missing two letters from the parsing!
As an example - the clue for 2d gives the U (university)+ 'a little' = 'tad' [reversed = DAT] + NG ('no good'). The other two letters in the answer are''not allowed for'' in the wordplay.
Symmetry is a big help locating the rest.
...sorry vesalius - I somehow missed your answer giving the same information!
