I have done the National Lottery twice a week since it began. I just noticed that there seems to be a Bonus Number that sits alongside the 6 actual numbers. Whats that all about? How do I get one?

You don't, you choose 6 numbers and if 5 of them and the bonus ball are drawn you get the second prize down in the list.
You've done it for more than 20 years and you have never heard of a bonus number.?
You cant get one. The bonus ball is drawn by the machine. You need all 6 numbers plus the bonus ball to win the jaackpot.
no you dont!
We won £295 last night. Nice little bonus.
I've never bought any lottery ticket, and even I knew about the bonus ball!
As others have indicated, the Bonus Ball is a 7th ball that's drawn in the lottery. It's only relevant if you've already matched five of the first six numbers. This graphic, taken from the National Lottery website, explains where it fits into the prize structure: https://ibb.co/QDS4DL5
