If I bought an Avocado from a store which outwardly looked perfect but on cutting was rotten and inedible would the shop in law be responsible for replacing it or would they argue that it was sold in good faith and a refund or replacement wouldn't be forthcoming?

I tweeted one major supermarket about some vegetables that I'd got from them, they were in date but off, some very slimy mushrooms. It was bit of a tongue in cheek post, but perfectly polite, I wasn't being funny with them.

They asked me to message them the details via a private message, with a copy of my receipt to prove I'd bought them and when. I think I attached a photo too.

They sent me a gift card with a refund loaded on it and a little extra for the inconvenience. I was very impressed! I didn't even mention a refund initially and wasn't expecting one.

take it back and say you couldnt eat it

they SHOULD be suitably apologetic

[only once I had the leddy count softly up to ten
and I realised that "you count up to ten and start all over again" or something and that she was being Very Patient with an obvious moron ( me) . Thing was at 'ten' - yup there was still rotten food and still me wanting a refund.....]

[There was one time when I said - "my pint of milk is spoilt and since it is in date by about a week, it means that it has been stored outside on a very hot afternoon. The rest of the batch has gone." about three hours later the whole of the milk in the supermarket had gone. well if they dont refrigerate it - it will go off]
In my experience when i normally buy avocados all i need to do is give them a quick squeeze or prod, this normally tells me if theyre either too hard or just right.
