Just saw this on Twitter and couldn't believe this is still carried out given the possibility of drowning. And on babies in some parts of Romania and possibly other places around the world.

Why is it necessary to immerse someone under water? Why not just sprinkle water on the forehead?

Shocking, as you say there's no need at all for immersion especially the face.
Poor little thing! The parents must be devastated.
Total immersion is usually found in those sects which do not practise infant baptism, such as the Baptist church and JWs.
Total immersion is indeed part of many churches.... but not for babies. For eg Baptist church you’d need to be old enough to choose / ask to be baptised yourself.... I was about 20 I think when I asked
another innocent death down to religious bowlocks. When will human kind dispense with this mumbo jumbo?
For many people it’s not mumbo jumbo tho. And the parents obviously thought they were doing what was best for their child’s salvation.

It is very very tragic indeed.... needless esp as the baby was prem
and yet there is a fad for giving birth under water; I can't get my brain around that, either.
How could the parents allow this?? Barbarism.
Eastern Orthodox baptisms routinely fully immerse babies, standard practice in Romania.
Birthing pools are safe. The baby is in fluid before being born and doesn't start to breath until its face is free of the water. Danger would be if it was then dropped back in.

Was just about to ask if babies don't start breathing until they are hit with fresh air.
roo - so I believe but it still feels iffy to me.
There's no protection from the stupidity factor.
So sad.
