Name that lizard!

I found a tiny lizard on my windowsill, inside the house. It was near a Begonia houseplant. It was about 6' long, the tail being about 3' of that. The body was no more than half an inch or so in diameter. It had quite big feet and looked to me as though it had sucker-like toes. It was a darkish grey colour all over. Could it have come out of the houseplant? The window was open, so I suppose it could have come in from outside. Anyone any idea what kind of lizard this could have been? Thanks!

Hi Flirty. The most common lizard in Britain is, appropriately enough, the common lizard, which fits your description except for the toes. The toes of the common lizard are little clawed digits, but the 'sucker toes' make it sound like some kind of Asian gecko (which can climb up smooth surfaces, even glass). Begonias are tropical, and some varieties come from India, so a gecko could have come with the plant, it's possible. TWxx

It could be a gecko, there's a multitude of different types although I've never seen one that long. Sorry, but I can't seem to find my recipe card just now.

I've found it! Sphaerodactylus Klauberi (Klauber's ball toed gecko). So it is an Indian gecko after all. If you want to see a photo, check out the Global Gecko Association on Google. TW xx

Morning Flirty! If your your little visitor is still around see if it has a whitish or reddish underbelly - if yes, then it's the Common Lizard, the only one that's all over the country. The size and colour is exactly right for this specie. If no, and it's carrying a passport then it's as TW says it's hitched a lift from overseas!

What a shame. I was so hoping it would have been something exotic but (sorry TW, xx), on looking and comparing photos, it had more of the look of your common lizard, Cetti! I don't recall the colour of it's tummy - to be honest, I didn't get that close!!!! But, on the basis of the information, a common lizard it must have been. Thank you all for your help anyway! Greedyfly - no I didn't keep him! My cats might have had something to say about it!
