Why is the refined salt I eat a lot cheaper than the salt sold to defrost ice on my path?

It may it be that different by weight, but the salt for your path is mined rock salt relatively expensive process. Table salt is simply produced by dehydration . low energy low complexity.

You're buying the salt in the wrong place barry1010. Its currently around £12 for 25kg on ebay with free delivery. That's nowhere near the cost of cooking/table salt with the exception of Saxa which is about £1.00 for a 750g drum.

Mining rock salt is not an expensive process and if anything is on par with salt from underground brine resources in the UK when all factors are taken into consideration. There is far more to it than simple dehydration.

I use cooking salt from Tesco. 80 pence for 1.5 kilos.

Tesco table salt is 47p a kilo. That is £11.75 for 25kg

Thanks for the price barry1010. In that case, Tesco table salt works out to cost about the same as the 25kg bulk packs of rock salt.
