I got a bird table for Xmas and flowing advice from lovely ABers got some dried mealworms
I put it outside yesterday about 1/2 way down my 200ft garden. It's the type with a roof and open sides.
No-one appears to have made a booking yet, and I've had no enquiries.
How do I let the customers know there's free food available, or will they just come?
Once they start coming, how often should I check it?

Andres, maybe I will expand the menu later on, but I have to see if it's a going concern before I branch out :)
Ensuring that there is fresh, unfrozen water nearby will help. They will come for a drink at your pub and then see that they can get a take-away on the way home.

all good suggestions, thanks. not long after i wrote this i looked up and there were about 6 birds there!
I agree with others who mention bushes. I never attracted any birds to my small garden until I plated out a buddleia bush. They like something to roost in and don't like being too visible. They also like hanging feeders in the bush as well.
I think perhaps the birds are taking the lockdown rules too seriously.
My blackies, starling, sparrows and solitary robin all know where to come.

Mrs Blacky lands beside me before I even put the food out!
I'm sure the 6 birds will now tweet good reviews.
Could this be adding to the problem too?

Put your feeders where robins perch as they will bring other birds to the table.
I find the main attraction is peanuts (fed through a squirrel proof cadge), other food, mealworms, seeds, fat balls etc, are offered as occasional treats, especially during cold weather.
if all else fails you could always post an advert on twitter
I don't use a bird table, the squirrels and pigeons get there first, but an enclosed feeder like this hung from a pole.

Didn't pay that price though.
The squirrels and pigeons get what ever drops on the floor, water near by is a good idea.
If anyone is handy I've built a few of these as gifts and have a couple myself from scrap timber, I have a ready source. Next plan is one with cctv, when finances allow.
Here are the plans.

Be patient, they are checking it out.
When I put out a new feeder amongst older ones, the birds seem to steer clear of it for a few days before they start to use it. I wonder if new feeders have to acclimatise as such before the birds will touch them? I always use sunflower hearts, all types seem to love those and suet cake.
