I have just read that over 60,000 (60,916) people have been tested positive for coronavirus in the past 24 hours. (sorry no link).

does that mean that more people are getting tested or that even more people are becoming ill or both?

That figure is sourced from the Government's official figures here: https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk The cause of the increase is almost certainly the far high virulence of the new strain of Covid-19, which is causing the R number to rise quickly.

Both.
More people are being tested and the results are coming back much quicker. It took 45 minutes from me being tested to getting the result.

Where an earth do you get 76,305, it is as lady-janine has stated which was on the news this evening.
The lower figure is tests and higher is total deaths.
The Min said 2% of the population tested AB positive which is a huge rise from 1% a few weeks ago

In the land of the Free- trump does not think it is a federal issue and it is around 10%
