in the express yesterday there was a story regarding a prison inmate who fell out of the top bunk of his bunk bed, he is now trying to sue the prison service. The story goes on to say that inmates are told how to sleep safe in their bunk beds. it amazes me the lengths that people will go to for a quick buck and even more so that people are advised how to sleep safely!

The way litigation is going they'll be sueing for being detained next!
The answer is easy. Outsource prisoners to Thaliand or Turkey then let them complain.

Of course the Government could just build a sufficient number of prisons in Travel Lodge style so they could all be kept in the comfort they deserve.
Our prisoners would never put up with travellodge standards YMB, much too down market!
If inmates are forced to sleep in bunks , and then they injure themselves falling out , then they have every right to expect compensation for it.Simple commonsense dictates that , regardless of who they are..x
Yeah and their victims are entitled to adequate compensation from them, but how many actually get it.
Once convicted you should loose alot of your rights. Suing for falling out of a bed is nuts. Lets hope the 'person' fell on his head and knocked some sense into him.
compensation for their victims is totally irrelevant, the fact is that they have been made to sleep in bunks , and if adequate provision is not made for the safety of this then they have the right to claim compensation for injury...x
Yes but surely the point is if they hadn't have broken the law, they wouldn't have to be sleeping in bunks in the first place?
So........... Ladyboyg1, if I happen to fall out of bed (and I actualy did once, a long time ago) do I stand a chance of a result if I sue because I haven't been mistakenly put on remand for something I never done, there-by denying me of any access to the chance of sueing as an inmate who banged his knee or wo-eva. P.S. Did you know your world has recently had its planet status removed?
He will probably be successful...and that is very sad. And all a waste of taxpayers money
P.S. they haven't been MADE to sleep in bunks; they have chosen to give the decision re. lodging arrangements to H.M.P. Service. They can sleep stood up for all I care!
An evil part of me thinks they should lose their rights to anything - including the right to sue or claim compensation - if they're in prison. By and large, they are there because they have harmed someone, or the rest of society - why should the public fund them to have a nice compensation nest-egg for when they're released?
My point is ,that if the law of this country dictates that these people, innocent or not, should be incarcerated and forced to sleep in bunks , then adequate safety arrangements should be in place to prevent injury. ..x
So lets wrap them all in cotton wool, and have nice padded floors, and better leave the door open, as they could injure themselves on that if it was locked, and lets give them all expensive mattresses, pillows, duvets etc..as they may get cold etc...and so on

I dont know how he injured himself, but the bloke is obviously a prat, and is out for every penny he can get, and can only open a bigger hole in the prison compensation claims.
Everybody seems to assume that this is all about why people are in prison rather then a discussion regarding health and safety issues.
If people could just climb down off their soapboxes for 2 seconds and look at this objectively then maybe it would help...x
Can certainly see Ladybug's point about it being a Health and Safety issue rather than a prisoner's rights one. As harsh as it sounds though, for the majority of prisoners, I could care less whether they have any health or safety. If they complain their conditions are so unsafe, they could try an East Asian prison instead and see how their criminals are housed and treated.

Having slept in a bunkbed until I outgrew it though, God knows what he was doing that he managed to fall out :o\
Slept in a bunkbed until you outgrew it ! ! ? ? ?
Goodness gracious! You must of done something realy bad. Were you let out any earlier for not complaining if you stubbed your toe or caught your shin on it. There are those who would do well to follow your example.
Changing your mind a bit Ladyboy?
