There was a clip on BBC Breakfast this morning of someone taking a throw-in starting with a somersault and then getting the ball into the penalty area. They claimed this was unique but I seem to remember a player back in the 60's (Chelsea?) doing this as a routine. Is my memory playing tricks?

No, you're correct. Anton Otalkowski (not sure of spelling) did that much later.
Sorry, I didn't see the clip, so my timing may be out. I thought anyway that such throws-in were subsequently banned.
there was a player who did that back in the 80s

80's is more likely than 60's for my memory. I seem to remember it was an English league game, probably 1st Division.
Yes (see above) - he played for West Ham and also, I believe, Southend United.

Has this type of throw-in been outlawed in the Home leagues?

Thanks all. I don't watch football now but I do have a slight interest in it. Seeing the throw-in on TV this morning took me back a few years.
I saw Steve Watson do it for Newcastle v Middlesbrough at Awesome Park, in the lat eighties or very early nineties
I think,BHG,you are thinking back to I an Hutchinson who was the first,as I remember,to perfect the long throw in.That was late 60’s early 70’s.He didn’t somersault though.
Question Author
Yes, I think I must be getting events mixed up. I remember the Hutchinson long throws (fits in with Chelsea) and I remember a somersault throw; I must have made them into a single event.
