I live by myself. I don’t have COVID. How can I transmit COvid to my family in Southampton when I go down there and visit them for Xmas?

It doesn’t make sense.

I'm not talking about survival. I'm talking about the likelihood of contracting it. Surely that is not dependant on age. So I think we must talk about figures because from this thread you give the impression that a 60 year old granny has a one in ten chance of contracting the virus, which is patently incorrect and extremely misleading. If I believed there was a one in ten chance of my contracting it my behaviour would be radically different to what it is.
Cross-posted...thank you x I'm not worried about generalisations usually. Just trying to get more accuracy with this one.
NJ I am also talking about contracting it as one cannot consider the survival rate of a disease if you hadn't contracted it.
Precisely. The Covid zealots will always have an answer, though.
//NJ I am also talking about contracting it as one cannot consider the survival rate of a disease if you hadn't contracted it.//

So you're suggesting that a sixty year old person in the UK has a one in ten chance of contracting Covid? If so, perhaps you could tell me how you arrived at that conclusion.
I am tired of playing with you and your figures as you know well, or should no well what zi am getting at.
We are not discussing one 61 year old but the large group of people alive and over the age of 60years old.
You continue supporting your beliefs and your opinions and I will continue with mine, each respecting each others opinions.

NJ suggests a 60 y had a one in 10 chance.....
and then asks someone to prove it ?

oh god this HAS to be AB on a sunday night .... heigh ho
carry on boys and girls
Sqad - I am SHOCKED that you are giving up in the face of invincible ignorance

I mean look at Trump
PP it has been a long day and I am tired, physically and mentally and no amount of reasoning will satisfy NJ.
He can have the floor .
Quite right sqad. Have a drink and put your feet up . ( AB can be exhausting at times ) .
PP, NJ was quoting SQAD who had stated earlier in this thread,
"Chrissa1 is a GRANDMOTHER...and has about a 1in10 chance of catching it in the UK.NOT 1in200,000 by being hit by a meteor."
Indeed, Corby. But let's not trouble ourselves with the figures. Let's just put out all sorts of unsubstantiated, highly misleading guff and then get the hump when somebody has the temerity to query them.
So if a respected doctor gives advice do you always go round demanding figures accusing them of guff must admit its tired me out reading your guff and it's clear nothing will convince you that this disease can pounce if we'er off are guard just for a minute and could kill us if we'er in a more vunerable group.
Although the rules are being relaxed the advice is still to stay at home..and stay safe..this transmits both ways and a trip from A to B ,whatsoever way you undertake that journey and no matter how careful you think you are being, will be an opportunity for transmission of virus to occur..I am staying home this Christmas too.. with the Long Covid effects I may add..5 months down the road my daily life is significantly impaired and will be for some time to come I have been advised....this virus is no joke...it is NOT "just flu"... STAY HOME...protect yourself, your loved ones and the population at large...
//So if a respected doctor gives advice do you always go round demanding figures...//

It was said on here that a 60 year old has a one in ten chance of contracting Covid. So if a "well respected doctor" told me that I'd ask him why he believed it was so. If I was a to accept that, my attitude to it and my behaviour when deciding whether to get out and about and what I do when I get there would be vastly different to the way it is. It suggests that to even encounter an infected person (without looking at the odds against contracting the virus from them) there must be around six million people in the UK currently walking around with the infection. That figure is patently absurd by any measure.

I don't need convincing that Covid can be a serious disease for the vulnerable. However, the vast majority of those who contract it will see little more than a mild illness. But there is no doubt that those in vulnerable groups should take extra care - if they want to. The problem with the pandemic is that there are huge amounts of seriously incorrect statements being bandied about and as a result we have half the country scared to set foot beyond their front door. One of those statements is contained in this thread.

I'm sorry you're tired of reading my posts - you can always ignore them if it suits you. But for you the phrase "Don't baffle me with the facts" seems entirely appropriate. I have pointed out a blatantly misleading statement made on here and I've provided an explanation of why it is incorrect. It is a statement which, if believed, would have most of the population who are not already doing so running for cover. Your response - you're "tired out of reading my guff." Well tire away. I believe one of the biggest problems with this situation is that of people accept misleading and incorrect information as gospel and it's causing huge problems. So when I see it I will challenge it. If you spent a little time analysing the information that is available instead of accepting sensationalist headlines you may be a little less weary.
But Sqad, you don't respect NJ's opinions, you keep coming on and arguing with him. He is as entitled to his opinion, as you are. And if I dare to agree with him, you have a pop at me as well. Not that I'm remotely bothered, I have a thick skin and won't be swayed from what I believe by anybody, especially on here!!
And you might pick it up on the way down. It gets passed on so easaly. 125000 deaths now, many more been through ICU wards. Most probly thought they were being fairly careful, wouldnt get it etc. Just takes a second brushing past someone who may not even know they have it
