it was bloody hell as i remember
freezing homes, wet damp clothes everywhere, no i didn't think it was fun. I am glad we don't get such extreme weather now
This Winter passed me by, it looked a cruel one ..
it was long and cruel, never forgot it, i don't like icy weather at all
i still can't handle bad weather, lucky we have online shopping now takes all the stress out of shopping
I can't imagine emmie, no online shopping, transport virtually at standstill.
things still got done, but it always seemed cold at home, wet clothes drying by the fire place, can't abide that even now.
That would be miserable.
allied to the fact we lived quite cramped one on top of the other, or so it seemed our flat being quite small.
I was 18. I remember walking on the frozen River Ribble, the first time it had frozen since 1947.
This post brought back real memories to me. I had a twenty minute journey to school on the bus through the countryside. It started snowing on boxing day and snowed through till March. The bus always ran and we never missed school. That year they had decided to demolish part of the school and rebuild it so they put wooden huts up on the lawn as a temporary measure. They had no heating so we had to wear coats, scarves and gloves for lessons. Happy days! We thought nothing of it. No such thing then as health and safety. These days, an inch of snow and the schools all close!!!
As far as 1947 goes, I was born at 2 in the morning in the February in the bedroom of a house with no heating except a coal fire in the living room and gas lighting. I don't remember anything about that but I am still here so I must have survived it!!!!
one survived but it wasn't necessarily a good time
i am glad that our winters are milder, i know that is probably due to global warming, but remember being cold at home, even with coal fire and electric fires in the bedrooms,
Electric fires - luxury!
We had ice on the inside of the window panes.
I certainly remember the big freeze. Especially so as I was serving in the RAF and had just recently returned from Christmas Island in the middle of the Pacific where the temperature was always in the hundreds. I returned to a station in Warwickshire and we had to keep the runways clear. Somebody came up with the bright idea of mounting a jet engine on a trailer and towing it up and down to melt the snow, unfortunately they had forgotten that the water would quickly refreeze. We had the longest skating rink in England.
We were living in a hole of the ground in 1963.
We had to leave home at 4am to walk to school to get there on time.
The snow was so deep we couldn't leave the house until June.
20 of us had to share a bed.
We killed all our sheep and wrapped ourselves in their fleeces to keep warm
I was in my early twenties in the winter of '63 and it was a great time to learn to drive ! I remember walking the length of the frozen Virginia Water in Surrey and seeing an old Austin 7 abandoned , or dumped, on a frozen section of the Thames near Hampton Court ! A wonderful time.
I was 13/14 at the time. My father was on night shift Xmas night, and as he got ready for work he looked out the window and saw that it was snowing. He was an hour late getting home the following morning. I didn't miss any school but it was a nightmare getting there as it involved two buses. I was late on a number of occasions. It snowed continuously till the end of March. My mother had to buy me some galoshes for my shoes as I wouldn't wear wellies.
Ha yes - galoshes! My dad had some that I found fascinating; I wonder if you can get them now.
How about these for the winter, a mere £465. If you told that to anyone going through that 1963 winter they'd have thought you were making it up:
