I was told there was rising damp but that's clearly not the problem. The rendering high on the wall is discoloured by damp. And as this is only on one wall could I get away without having to do the entire house?

Sorry Sandy, it's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string?
One of my offspring answered that question for me.

"Umm, dad, it's twice half its length"
Surely you need to find out why the rendering is damp first!
Mexican18 is right, it's no good rendering it until you know what is causing it or it will just come back.

I was thinking it might be caused by leaks in the gutters. If I asked a company that replaced gutters they'd likely say that was the problem, whether it was or not.
How do I find someone who'd look at the problem and give an honest answer?
same problem how long is a piece of string, giving honest opinions isn't what many builders do. Can you find a one man band rather than a company...
sandy - my niece got her roof cleaned at the beginning of the week and would think the company could look at your wall and give you a bit of an idea. Would you like to number via here
sandy you are based in NI, am i right.
Question Author
That's right, Emmie, in Belfast.
Jennyjoan, thank you.
maybe I worded the post Sandy - would you like the number?
Have you got guttering on the gable end? Very unusual.
Question Author
Jennyjoan, yes please send the number.
Mexican18, I don't know what I was thinking of. There's no gutters on the gable wall.
Once the problem of where the problem is coming from, is solved, could the stained render not just be painted instead of being re rendered?
Get a couple of builders to take a look -avoid 'companies' who do fancy rendering. It could be rain is getting underneath the existing rendering through cracks, especially if the gable end is exposed to wind. A builder may suggest a full render, or, if they find the problem, then they can hack out the damaged rendering and patch it up -then you can repaint the whole lot.
we are a lot of things sandy
sandyRoe who is looking at sandtex
but quantitiy surveyors and telepaths are we not

you going to have to get some quotes

he will splatter on the rendering as with a machine gun!

sorry sorry gets coat
Question Author
Peter Pedant,
We have long ago beaten our weapons into ploughshares. The builders might use them now as makeshift trowels to throw the render against the walls.
I am a bad boy sozza
