What is the best and safest way of downloading videos onto my PC?

I use Firefox as my browser, with this wonderful extension:

You simply have to click on the big green 'Download As' button that's added to every Youtube page and choose your preferred format. It's an absolute doddle to use.

Note: The very highest-quality video quality, and MP3 format audio, requires that Firefox thinks you've made a donation to the extension's developer. I've actually made several over the years, as I'm so impressed with the software.
