My neighbours!!
Check out my post a couple of days ago.
Ah, so you have tried them.
Near where I live in the local woods, there are several abandoned cottages and they all have an orchard one of which had a wallnut tree and they taste really good.they're hard to get too but well worth the trouble.

I always assumed that walnuts were cooked in some way, before we get them. Are you telling me we eat them raw?
No Mamya, I was just being silly!!
Are the ones you are eating still in there shells? The grandkids love using the nutcracker and then make fairy beds of the two halves. Walnuts are not, to my knowledge, roasted like other nuts can be. We have just roasted the pumpkin seeds from our Halloween pumpkins
My husband goes carp fishing on a lake in France when we are on holiday and last year he collected 8kg of walnuts from the trees round the lakes. He also collected 4kg of hazelnuts. Luckily there was room in the car as there was space where his bait had been. Our holiday in April was cancelled as was our September one otherwise I'd think we'd have to get a market stall to get rid of them all. A little old lady watches out for him now as he gets them down from the higher branches for her. Should video it really as it is really funny watching them.
When I worked in Albania we picked walnuts from the tree when the "shells" were still green. Easy to peel and delicious.
Pickled walnuts are nice with a good cheese.
