nobs: "I wouldn't know - anyone on twitter if I fell over them :) " - really you don;t know anyone on twitter? Right oh!
Ok perhaps id know trump if I fell over him :)
The users are the problem. Out of interest... I just watched The Social Dilemma on Netflix, part documentary and drama about social sites from the people who started them. It was really interesting.
But, the blame is with those who abuse them, not the methods.

There are millions upon millions of photos of people and their kids on social media and the web in general.//

Totally different. People who post pics of their children on FB and the like are not trying to be anonymous and can -to a certain extent- decide who can and can't see the photos. Any personal photos posted on AB are totally open to the whole world you don't even need an account. Add to this the fact those who care to post their phots are often more than willing to share other private aspects of their lives. Double whammy! Then they complain someone has contacted their place of work or made fake FB accounts using their pics. Just a bit of common sense is needed really.
This is s forum, and I've always thought forums fell under the definition of social media.
// Social media is a collective term for websites and applications which focus on communication, community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Different types of social media are normally dedicated to forums, microblogging, social networking, social bookmarking, social curation, and wikis are among them.//

One can not put a technological genii back into a bottle. Police are already supposed to track down paedophile activity. Adults need to not worry about fakes. It's not them so why waste time stressing over it.
It’s just the medium.

Here speaks the naive older generation - sorry no offence but did you realise that most Companies will look up names of potential employees using social media platforms. If you cross someone, and they set up a fake FB page showing what looks like you with all your goods on show , or starts spouting off left or right wing propaganda in your name -well who is to know its fake? -and FB don't care.
My work checked up on all my sm accounts including this one.
Anyone you tell that it's fake. Folk are not so naive as to believe you plaster this sort of photo everywhere. Besides a fake site claiming to be you is a separate issue.

If you don't know who is looking at your profiles how can you tell them it's fake? I want to employ jane smith. I google her and find she's posting anti-Semitic rantings on twitter & FB -how can I tell if its really her or not?

You can ask. But seriously, in this day and age, one would have done one's own search beforehand and had any malicious stuff reported/investigated/removed. As mentioned, it's a separate issue.
OG // and had any malicious stuff reported/investigated/removed//

Promise this is the last word on the subject but good grief! if it was that easy!
The linked story isn't about Twitter.
Twitter has banned Deepfakes.
How is that a problem, they are acting responsibly.
If Twitter was awash with Deepfakes, it would be a problem, but it isn’t, and they are now warning users that Deepfakes are against the Site Rules and will be removed.

don't do twitface, not for love nor money
Calling it twitface is so childish.

And I don't use Twitter.
no it isn't, it's appropriate...
