a "rag" can be a synonym for a disreputable mag also! ..but I believe it should be rag rather than mag and "disreputable" is used as the anagram indicator.

It is not an anagram of "mag" though. It is an anagram of rag. If it was "disreputable "RAG" " then it is an anagram. If "disreputable mag",
is a synonym for rag, there is no "anagram indicator". Unless mag is a synonym for rag, without being "disreputable"

I thik it is one of those clues where a word has two meanings.In this case disreputable.Not very satisfactory but it happens quite a lot.
